Astronaut Vic Vanderhoff stepped down the ladder of the large, streamlined rocket that towered above him. He was the first human to set foot on the Red Planet. Fine orange dust puffed up over his boots as he hit the ground. He glanced back at the rocket window and gave the commander a "thumbs up" then he turned to gaze out over the eerie red horizon. In his left hand he held a long hose attached to a funnel-like probe that Vic was holding with his right hand. He swept the probe back and forth in a slow criss-cross motion. The Atmospheric Aspirator was collecting vital data about the Mars' atmosphere. Was their radiation? noxious gas? The A.A. would let him know immediately what...
“VICTOR!” a high-pitched voice yelled from another room in the modest post-war bungalow. “Haven’t you finished vacuuming the living room yet? You’ve been out there for over an hour.”
Victor reached down to shut off the Eureka vacuum cleaner, “What’s that dear…just vacuuming out here…I’m almost done,” he replied, a little startled from the abrupt awakening from his daydream. He had been staring at small section of carpet for who knows how long, sweeping the vacuum hose back and forth.
“Oh my word, hurry up and finish, The ladies from the Auxillary will be over in less than a half an hour. I want that carpet clean and the Roto-Matic back in its box,” Agnes shouted back.
“Yes dear,” Victor mumbled as he turned the Roto-Matic back on. The drone of the vacuum’s motor lulled him back into his adventure on Mars--his gloved hand sweeping the Atmospheric Aspirator probe back and forth, back and forth.
Here's a fun find--a 1950s vinyl covered storage box with padded seat cushion on top which was originally designed to house a Eureka Roto-Matic vacuum cleaner plus accessories. This cool box has a great retro look to it with sparkly gold and white vinyl and loads of storage space inside. Use it as a side table or coffee table and keep blankets, magazines, off season clothing, etc. inside. It would also make a funky storage/seating piece for a mudroom or foyer. The box measures 18" tall, 21" wide and 16" front-to-back. It is has a steel frame with vinyl covered Masonite panels on all sides and top. The lid has a thin cushion on the top so it could be used to sit on and it opens up with hinges on the back side. Inside the lid there are some fun graphics with "Eureka Roto-Matic Swivel Top Cleaner" printed in red. There are also elastic loops that were originally designed to hold vacuum accessories.
This piece is in very good vintage condition considering that it is over 60 years old. The exterior vinyl is very clean but we did find some small tears on one back, top corner (see last photo). The gold metal frame has a few light scratches but no major issues. The interior is very clean with no foul odors.
