DISTRESSED CANVAS FISHING CREEL
(Scroll down below story to read complete item description/condition)
Gary stepped off the plane in Belfast, Northern Ireland. On one arm was his carry-on shoulder bag. Under the other arm was his fishing rod case. Inside his carry-on bag was his treasured cargo of fly fishing gear including his Dad's old canvas creel, spare reels and loads of hand-tied flies in every pattern imaginable. The young American was in England on business and he was able to arrange a couple of days off so he could fish for the famous Dollaghan brown trout found only in the biggest lake in Northern Ireland, known as Lough Neagh, as well as the rivers that feed into it.
During the flight over from London, he was consumed with thoughts of which fly pattern he would use first. Would it be the Back Pennell, the Gold Head Hares Ear or maybe the trusty Dunkeld. He was still in the "fishing zone", hardly even acknowledging the rental car clerk as he signed the paperwork and soon found himself stowing his gear in the back of a Mini Cooper. Gary drove through the countryside until he reached his destination, the Ballinderry River. He drove upriver until he found a spot to park on a gentle slope leading to the river's edge. Before you could say "Ballinderry" he was donning his waders on and minutes later smoothly casting his line trying to drop his fly into a large eddy. Seconds later he felt the jerk on his line followed by a goodly sized Dollaghan leaping out of the water, fly in mouth. Gary was so busy battling that fish that he didn't notice that behind him, his rental Mini Cooper was slowly rolling into the river. Apparently in his haste, he had forgotten to put the car in gear and set the emergency break. He laid his net down and scooped up the trophy fish oblivious to the Cooper slowly floating down river behind him. It wasn't until two hours later did Gary notice the car was missing - about the same time the car made landfall on the shores of Lough Neagh.
Here's an interesting old canvas fishing creel with a great patina from years of use. A perfect display piece for your lake cabin or lodge decor. This creel was made in Japan probably in the 1960s and measures 15" wide, 9.5" tall and expands to 3" deep. It is constructed out of canvas with a 1.5" wide webbed shoulder strap. The adjustable shoulder strap is approx. 48" long. The bag has a main section that is rubberized inside and has small nylon mesh panels on each end. Outside there's There's one long snap flap pocket on the front, top as well as two smaller pockets below. It also features a printed ruler on the top pocket flap.
This creel has a wonderful patina from years of use with some fading, soiling and a few small holes (1/4" dia.) on bottom and side. The thin rubberized interior lining has become brittle with age and has some soiling. Although it is structurally sound, we wouldn't recommend using this one for fishing but rather as a decor item.
