December 1944, the Ardennes forest of Belgium- US Army Corporal Joel Sheebler was crouched in his bitter cold foxhole while German artillery ordinance rained down shrapnel from above. The shelling finally stopped but soon a silent, frozen mist set in and chilled him to his very core. Only the warm thoughts of home and hearth kept him going through those dark days. He would spend hours daydreaming about warm toast, fresh out of the toaster, smothered with homemade strawberry jam.

1946, Joel had made it through what would become known as "The Battle of the Bulge", and through the rest of the war, now he was being discharged from the army. His first order of business was to go down to Sears & Roebuck and buy himself a Toastmaster toaster. He would go on to purchase dozens of toasters over the next few years and in 1951 opened his "dream" business -- "Sheebler's Toast Bar" in his home town of Hackensack, New Jersey. Well needless to say, the toast bar idea didn't catch on but Joel never again experienced a shortage of good toast.

This well-made Toastmaster model 1B9 was made in late 1941 to early 1942. It is the epitome of classic appliance design with chrome body and dark brown Bakelite handles and signature etched design lines on each slide. This fabulous working toaster was made to last with high quality heating elements and heavy gauge materials. It measures 7.5" tall X 11" x 5" and weighs in at just approx. 5 lbs. It is an automatic pop up toaster with a toast darkness dial and will accommodate a slice of bread up to 5" wide X 3/4" thick in each of the two slots. It has its original 6' braided cotton insulated cord. This beautiful toaster would make a fine addition to the retro-styled kitchen. Makes a great gift to someone who appreciates solid, old-school American appliance design.

This working toaster is in good vintage condition considering its age. The chrome is shiny with a few scratches but no dents. We found some specs of pitting mainly on the top side. It makes a good piece of toast, the toast pops up automatically and the darkness dial turns smoothly and appears to function. The interior mechanics are fairly clean although we did find a few small spots of rust. The cloth insulated cord is in good condition with no frays or cracks. The plug looks like it has been updated at some point in its life.

We've tested this unit and it works well but as with all electrical items of this age we cannot guarantee that it will be safe to use on a daily basis, we'll leave that to your discretion. When you purchase this item you are agreeing to our store policies. Please take a moment to review them.
