WORLD WAR TWO PACIFIC BEACH, CA ANTI-AIRCRAFT TRAINING CENTER TOOLBOX
(full item description/condition info can be found below story)
The day after Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, Dick Haplinger joined the U.S. Navy so he could fight for his country. He dreamed of manning an anti-aircraft gun, loading the sky with lead and bringing down Japanese Zeros or German Messerschmitts, it didn't really matter so long as he was the one shooting at them. But to his dismay, he was made a non-com supply officer and assigned to the "battle of logistics." He spent four years taking inventory and fulfilling requisition orders.
When Dick got out of the Army in 1945 he headed back to his hometown of Sioux City, Iowa where he settled back into civilian life, but couldn't stop thinking that he'd missed his chance to shoot down enemy aircraft. So the frustrated, AA gunner wannabe did the only logical thing he could think of, he took up duck and goose hunting. Dick became know around Iowa waterfowl hunting circles as a crack shot and put many a former AA gunner to shame with his unbelievable long shots. He amassed a large collection of duck and goose decoys, duck calls and other hunting gear. Ironically the former Navy supply officer stored his shotgun shells and duck calls in an old steel toolbox which once served as a toolbox for the Anti-Aircraft Training Center in Pacific Beach, California--he'd picked it up a war surplus store.
Here's an ultra cool find--a former World War II toolbox that came from the Pacific Beach, California Anti-Aircraft Training Center. It still retains the original paper label with a list of tools it used to hold. This heavy duty, metal box is made of thick steel plates and weighs over 17 lbs. It measures 25" wide, 8.5" front-to-back and 4.5" tall (plus handle). It is has a wonderful distressed black paint finish, chipped and worn revealing Navy gray below plus some remnants of painted lettering. It has its original handles on each end and someone added a center carrying handle on the top lid at some point in its life. There's one center flip-done padlock loop as well two other latches. The inside of the lid is lined with wood and as mentioned there are remnants of the original tool inventory label as well as a couple of other paper labels that are all but worn off. This box would make a nice addition someone who collects World War Two militaria but also has a great industrial look so would be equally at home in an industrial chic decor.
As mentioned above this box has a nice patina of distressing including worn and chipped paint, scratches and some rust but is free of dents and is structurally sound. One of the lid latches is broken but the other one still secures the lid shut and you can also add a lock to the center loop. The interior has lots of scratches and worn paint as well as some areas of surface rust but no excessive grime or oily buildup. The inventory label pasted to the interior of the lid is about 70% still there and you can still make out the "Pacific Beach California Anti-Aircraft Training Center" text as well as some of the tool inventory. You can also make out a "War Bonds Seal" graphic on the label.
